Steelers Poised for Accord On 78 Cent Wage Bet- ter Plan
A late proposed wage and benefit package worth 78 cents per hour aims to avert a nationwide steel strike. If approved, 540,000 steel workers would receive immediate 20 cent hourly increases with 12 and 13 cent raises in years two and three, plus pensions rising to $6.50 monthly after 30 years. Eight holidays per year and a 5 percent bonus for non incentive workers are included, with extra cents for top classifications and bereavement pay. Union leaders caution gains are still disputed, seeking 6 to 10 percent overall and broader coverage. Talks continue as leaders stay on standby for a possible ratification before the deadline.
