Gov Orval Faubus secures a third term nomination after an overwhelming primary win in Arkansas. He cites a public condemnation of federal intervention and bayonets in cities and schools as part of his victory statement.
Gov. Faubus surged to a large lead and won renomination as tallying continued after a flood devastated River Plate areas. Opponents Chris Finkbeiner and State Judge Lee Ward trailed with 45,278 and 44,989 votes respectively. only 2,066 precincts reported. The flood damaged up to 10,000 homes and deaths or disappearances were reported.
Jim R Tapman, 24, a former Air Force sergeant, rode his bicycle from Ohio to Long Beach over about 2000 miles. He began May 19 in Cleveland and ended the journey after visiting his parents in El Monte. He slept under the stars or with hosts. only once in a motel after a soaking shower. He plans to study at Long Beach City College and may seek ministry after graduation. He rode about eight hours back up from Grand Canyon's bottom, claiming to be the first to reach it by bicycle. He found travel inexpensive and met many people including an all Indian nations Pow Wow in Playstaff Arizona.

Standard Oil of California sues three former executives in U S District Court seeking 400000 in damages. Named defendants are Howard R. Cuyler August P Johnson and Howard Gunnels all alleged to have benefited from secret payments tied to Standard Oil products sold to Texas Independent Oil Co of Phoenix Arizona. Horace Steele is linked as president and major shareholder of the Texas Independent Oil Co and all five are said to have been partners in Hahn Enterprises.
An Air Force B52 Stratofortress crashed during a training flight near Limestone Maine. Eight crewmen died and one survived Maj Moody E Deaton of Denison Texas the sole survivor hospitalized in good condition. The aircraft from the 42nd Bomb Wing disintegrated in a field three miles south of Limestone after takeoff. Councilman D Pat Ahern and City Attorney Waihfred Jacobson clashed over funding and tideland issues for the Auditorium Annex beach work lifeguard service and maintenance. Ahern demanded action and a timetable Jacobson refused saying schedules cannot be given. The council plans to continue the dispute next Tuesday with renewed vigor to prosecute the cases.
