Construction Starts on Now Our Lady of Refuge Church
The Now Our Lady of Refuge parish begins building a permanent church at the corner of Stearns and Jos Coyntrs Diagonal. The reinforced concrete and brick structure features transepts aligned with the sanctuary seating about 200 per transept and a marble main altar five feet from the back wall. A free standing 80 foot bell tower, indirect lighting, stained glass and a large Our Lady window at the entrance are planned with J Bruer as architect and building contractor John Dallas. The 1948 established parish will convert the 1949 temporary church into a parish auditorium after completion.

Increasing Lay Activity Aims at Better Church Conversions
A Presbyterian minister notes that large denominations grow only marginally each year, prompting calls for more active lay recruitment. Catholic scholar Fr. John A. O'Brien joins the critique, citing low conversion rates compared with Jehovah's Witnesses. The piece argues nearly all major churches underuse lay members in evangelism and urges wider lay participation to boost conversions.
