A UPI report from Beirut says a U.S. Marine private first class was killed by a rebel sniper while walking near the olive grove south of Beirut International Airport. Doctors noted a clean head wound, implying the shot came from some distance, with no powder burns.
Four lifeguard divers searched into darkness for Wayne G. Donelly Ir., six, who disappeared from the Gavero II bait boat moored at Happy Harbor Anchorage in Wilmington. The boy left with the boat’s crew while his father’s friend worked on the engine. police and juvenile officers searched the yacht anchorage and ocean until nightfall and planned dawn resumption with more divers from Los Angeles.
A rejected suitor on the Pacific Coast Highway tried to drive off a bridge toward Seal Beach. Donald Wilt 28 and Phyllis Aultman 19 were found in serious condition after Wilt’s car plunged 99 feet into the San Gabriel River upside down. Aultman was cut and bruised. Wilt was held for attempted suicide.
Cmdr. Malcolm Ross and M. Lee Lewis survived a perilous landing in a North Dakota pasture after a 34 5 hour ascent into the stratosphere. Their gondola bounced about a mile of barren ranch land before they crawled free, ending the team’s record attempt.
Morongo Valley California authorities blamed an arsonist for a 5000 to 6000 foot level brush fire in Big Morongo Canyon Sunday that blackened about 1000 acres of watershed. No structures were in danger as 200 workers with shovels and axes, guided by a helicopter, fought the blaze seven miles northwest of the desert community. The fire began near a state forestry camp after being spotted at noon Saturday. Three recent fires in San Bernardino County were deemed incendiary.
Hollywood reports Sam Goldwyn relieved Rouben Mamoulian as director of Porgy and Bess and engaged Otto Preminger. Mamoulian says he will bring suit. Goldwyn cited irreconcilable views on matters as the reason for the change.
London reports that Secretary of State Dulles and Prime Minister Macmillan backed holding the East West summit in New York despite French objections while agreeing to keep the Baghdad Pact intact despite Iraq's revolution. Dulles said the US would not join as a full member. talks aimed to shore up a new Middle East defense lineup to deter Russia.
The pair achieved an altitude of 82,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon flight. They described viewing lightning and storms from above and reported a slight ground landing malfunction dragging the balloon about six feet. After landing they visited Jamestown airport for coffee and rest. Their in-flight live telecast reached ground viewers as the mission tested pressurization of the gondola.
