Extra retirement funding for California teachers approved
A six member legislative committee tentatively backed boosting state and local funding for California teachers retirement. The plan would raise minimum per pupil funding by 1988 89 and add about 200 million more than prior measures. Districts including Los Angeles San Francisco and Oakland would receive tens of millions in additional support, while many smaller districts would gain about one million each. The panel aims to reconcile Senate and Assembly versions before the full legislature returns from recess.

School and tax bills could force large future costs
Sacramento officials warn that two Democratic backed measures, a school tax and property tax relief, would rapidly raise annual costs from 1.1 billion and 945 million in 1977-78 to about 3.6 billion by 1982. Speaker Leo McCarthy says the surge would exceed current and projected surpluses, requiring limits to avoid tax increases.
