Postal Chief Warns of Disgraceful Service Cuts Loom
Postmaster General W. Marvin Watson pleaded before the Senate Post Office Committee that manpower reductions could force a disgraceful cut in mail service. He argued the issue is staffing, not money, and warned Congress to exempt the Post Office from the rollback. Watson outlined planned actions including ending Saturday residence delivery, halting delivery to new homes, closing 500 third and fourth class offices, and leaving rural vacancies unfilled. He stressed the danger to service as mail volume rises toward 93 billion pieces.
