Eleven Million Suit Over Southern California Strike
The three week old building trades strike in Southern California leads to an $11.45 million damage claim against the Plumbing Heating and Piping Employers Council of Southern California and over 600 affiliates. The suit seeks an injunction to stop the council from interfering with union negotiations with individual contractors. FHA reports the strike has slowed tract housing inspections, reducing weekly inspections from about 1,000 to 500. About 8,000 plumbers 5,000 sheet metal workers and 4,000 hod carriers walk out for higher wages. Judge Arnold Praeger denied a modification bid by the employers to limit union bargaining to a single association while a settlement is sought.
