Hollywood welcomes Miss Universe contestants to 20th Century Fox

At 20th Century Fox Studios the 1979 Miss Universe contenders arrived for lunch drawing glare from cameras and stars. Hugh O’Brien welcomed them as Wyatt Earp, while Richard Egan greeted the group with kisses. Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman joined the lunch group with Don Murray and Lee Remick from other studio productions.

Miss Universe prelims open as 15 vie for final

Contestants begin the Miss United States preliminary judging at Municipal Auditorium in a week of decision. Advise Khrushchev to Ask U.N. Probe of Anglo-U.S. Acts

Washington reports that the Western Allies drafted a note to Soviet Premier Khrushchev urging him to complain to the United Nations Security Council if he believes American and Allied actions threaten international peace. Iraq Premier asks West to maintain friendship

Americans Flown Out of Iraq Reach Rome Refugees

A UPI report states 92 Americans arrived in Rome from Baghdad aboard a giant DC-6B airliner, the first group airlifted out after Iraq’s government was overthrown. The passengers include 36 women and 54 children, with two men and two dachshunds among them. The flight marks the start of an effort to evacuate about 1,500 Americans, as Rome officials and embassy contacts coordinate departures through Ankara and Tehran.
