Tunisia's Neo Destour regime gathers after a member of the Bey family was arrested amid reports of plans to dethrone the Bey and install Premier Habib Bourguiba as president. The Action weekly foresees a republic and a new era following independence from France.
Observers report Tunisians view the new constitution as a formality while Bourguiba accuses the Bey of wealth acquired under the French protectorate. The 5-year-old Bey Sidi Mohammed Al-Amin J ascended the throne in 1943 after French deposed his cousin for pro-Nazi leanings.
