Johnson Announces Air Action in Vietnam Night Address
President Johnson spoke from the White House late Aug 4 detailing alleged aggression by North Vietnam and announcing air strikes against gunboats and petroleum facilities near Vinh. The operation involved carriers Ticonderoga and Constitution, with reports of heavy damage and two U S planes lost. One pilot, Lt. Richard Sather, was killed, another POW, Lt. Everett Alvarez Jr., captured. Senate committees were briefed on Aug 6 about results and a possible electronic device nicknamed the black box aboard the Maddox.
