Baby Dies as Fire Hits Long Beach Home
A flash fire in a rear apartment at 1339 A Wrens Street Long Beach killed a two month old child and left a 23 year old mother, Mary Winfree, and her sister with burns and smoke inhalation. The infant died at St. Marys Hospital. The father Lew Winfree, 26, suffered superficial burns. A wicker crib and five portable televisions valued at $924 were removed from the scene. Police believe the fire started in the smoke-filled room while the mother tried to rescue her children.
