Teamsters Growth Questioned as Hoffa Era Lags Beck
U S sworn reports show Teamsters membership under President James R Hoffa remained below the Beck era peak. Miami Beach convention notes 1 487 104 members in 1959 and 1 417 531 in 1958 with 1 565 071 officers and members cited as the high. The union, still the nation's largest, faced job losses and automation impacts while Hoffa says the rank and file is solid and militants lead the officers.

Morton noted no other Republican looks like a safe bet for Sacramento's statehouse at present.
