Cleaver Talk Sparks UC Controversy Before Senate Panel
UC Chancellor Roger W. Heyns defended Eldridge Cleaver’s campus appearance amid McClellan’s charges that Cleaver sought to teach students how to make molotov cocktails and incite riots. Heyns insisted the talk offered firsthand insight into racism and noted Cleaver did not provoke students. The procedure included a board vote and campus sit-ins following the Regents decision barring Cleaver from speaking.
