Three Los Angeles conservatives Henry Salvatori Holmes Tuttle and A C Ruble backed Reagan to become California’s next governor. Ruble died June 1 aged 72, leaving Salvatori and Tuttle as the remaining organizers who say they started the effort that propelled Reagan. Ruble defended conservative government and private enterprise over federal power amid the push to place Reagan on the national stage.
