Holiday traffic toll dips to 39 in state
SACRAMENTO AP Thirty nine persons were killed on the state's streets and highways during the Fourth of July weekend, two fewer than last year, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday. Patrol spokesman Bob Fabs said the toll is the lowest for a three day holiday period since 1960 when 27 died. In CHP areas freeways and non city areas the death toll was 22, down four from 1975. The CHP used about 13 000 hours of overtime between 6 p m Friday and midnight Monday. The lower deaths are an indication the extra manpower is doing some good, Fahs said. Overtime is financed by a federal traffic safety grant of over 700 000 dollars. It provides 40 000 hours of overtime split among Memorial Day Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays. Fahs said CHP made 1 805 drunk driving arrests over Fourth of July, 194 more than a year ago.
