First air-bag trial as nationwide push clashed in 60 day fight
A three year old Shelby Sutcliffe tests an air bag in a mock car as defense of Secretary Adams 1984 mandate spurs formation of NCACP. Pro air bag advocates push for universal deployment while opponents led by Rep. Shuster and Sen. Griffin seek to kill or delay the plan. Nader warns of lives saved and criticizes timing, noting small car vulnerability. The dispute hinges on whether air bags will save lives and how quickly automakers can implement the safety feature.
