High Court Stays King Jail Term
The Supreme Court, in a stay issued by Justice Potter Stewart, delays five day jail terms for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and seven other Alabama desegregation leaders until a new hearing. The court, noting the Birmingham contempt convictions, ordered the parties to seek relief through Alabama courts but gave no reason for not pursuing dissolution of the order locally. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund condemned the ruling as a threat to First Amendment rights. The earliest rehearing could occur October 9.
