Plan Talks To End Long Local Strike Monday
Federal conciliator John Fenton says talks may occur Monday between Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 10S and Sheet Metal Contractors’ Association, though Local 420 says no representatives have been approached. The strike paralyses 6 000 sheet metal workers and 12 000 plumbers, with 4 000 hod carriers idle in LA and Orange counties. The stoppage has halted about half a billion dollars in construction and affects 5 400 plasterers and 3 000 lathers. Judge Rhone loosens a restraining order to let nonmembers sign work agreements, but unions cannot sign individually with council members.
