Four star generals Lyman Lemnitzer Horace Wade and Sir Robert Bray hitched a ride with motorist Joseph Holmes after fog forced their helicopter to land near Brussels. Holmes drove them to SHAPE headquarters and they posed for a photo, a Stars and Stripes note.

Search Widens for Lost Plane Over Southwest
Planes comb Southern California and Arizona for a single engine plane missing since June 23 with two Rio, Wisconsin couples aboard. Mr and Mrs Richard Olson and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Portenberg and ten children were visiting a babysitter before a vacation to Winton near Merced. The last contact was with Yuma airport as the pilot asked for Los Angeles weather.

Old Charlie the Slave Turned Centenarian in Florida
Bartow resident Charlie Smith recalls being sold into slavery on July 4 as a boy of 12. He gained freedom at 21 but stayed with his Texas master’s family, later earning Social Security at 106 while running a soft drink shop that serves as his home. He still receives Christmas and birthday checks from Mrs. Oscar Hederstrom of Kansas City.

Freight Derailed Crowns in Surf Near Winslow
A Santa Fe freight train derailed 13 miles west of Winslow Arizona delaying 24 cars of 89. Twenty one cars loaded with Bakersfield potatoes overturned with no injuries reported. In Malibu California Phil lip Quackenbush 19 Norco drowned in surf about 100 yards off shore and died on arrival at the hospital.
