Feminist Credit Unions Start In Detroit and LA
Detroit and Los Angeles host founding efforts for the nations first feminist credit union. Leaders Joanne Parent and Valerie Kladke describe a common bond, seven founders and a National Credit Association charter as the path to women achieving credit equality. They stress self help, non profit status, and lending policies that account for women's unique finances. The Detroit FCU, chartered Aug. 26, 1973, now serves Flint and Ann Arbor with about 100 new members monthly and a growing loan portfolio while aiming to broaden participation to more California cities.
