U S to Keep Its Europe Troops on NATO Line
Army Secretary Wilber M. Brucker said no U S troops will be withdrawn from Europe as the United States keeps forces right astride the NATO line. He opposed merging the services into a single armed forces and linked Japan withdrawal to a planned fulfillment of a promise to Japan. He noted 1 million in uniform and 400000 civilian workers, with troops in 72 countries and 60 percent in the United States. Gen Maxwell D Taylor warned that general atomic war is unlikely but communist aggression remains a threat as Gettysburg remarks stressed the nuclear era.
