The Dow gained 3.34 to 844.4, volume eased to 9.69 million shares as 1,428 issues advanced while 442 declined and 241 held steady. General Motors rose 1.4, Chrysler 1, American Motors 0.44, Ford down 0.44 as overall market remained cautious.
