New Surgeon General Report Links Smoking to Stillbirths
A new surgeon general report, though not yet released by HEW, ties cigarette smoking to harm for pregnant women and cites smoking as a leading cause of lung cancer in men. The American Medical News summarized the findings, noting UK data on higher infant deaths among smoking mothers and linking smoking to coronary disease and chronic lung disease in the United States. The Tobacco Institute criticized the report as conflicting science, while noting NAS findings that smoking may not significantly affect offspring death or damage.
