Nearly 7,000 California students will enter the state scholarship contest in Sacramento as part of the California State Scholarship Commission program. Deadline for return of applications is February 10, officials said Thursday. The event marks the third statewide scholarship initiative in the capital.

Douglas Oil Co of California with Free man Fairfield and Morton & Daily announced the completion of 87 wells in the West Wilmington Field. Hancock Oil Co. finished two wells in Lea County New Mexico. Combined output from the 87 wells runs about 2,400 to 2,500 barrels daily while Hancock’s new wells produce 265 and 286 barrels daily under reduced rates.
Dr Bruce A MacEwing, 42, an osteopath, was remanded to state prison by Superior Judge Beach Vasey to serve two concurrent terms for conspiring to perform illegal surgery. The state supreme court denied a petition for a hearing. The physician had prior suspicions tied to golf practice on the White House south lawn.
