Helms Disavows CIA Domestic Spying in Senate Hearing
Former CIA Director Richard Helms testified to a closed Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that any CIA infiltration of American dissident groups was done without his knowledge. Sen Gale McGee quoted Helms as saying nothing that impugned his integrity as a witness while other senators questioned the extent of his knowledge. Church called for more witnesses before ruling on his candor. Helms, now ambassador to Iran, previously denied CIA involvement in domestic surveillance.
