Long Beach Council Approves Urban Park Plans and Vacancies Policy
Long Beach City Council heard an urban planning briefing on a 51 acre aquatic park near Pacific Terrace and the convention center. The body adopted a vacancy notification policy for commissions, directed action on several traffic, housing, and contracting items, and proclaimed February as American History Month.

Orange County Sheriff Plans Major Office Reorganization
The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved in principle a plan by Sheriff Bradley M. Gates to reorganize the department. It eliminates the office of under sheriff and creates chiefs of operations, corrections and special services, each supervising about 300 employees and sharing the $6 million annual budget under Gates. This major shakeup ends over two decades of the same structure. former Sheriff James A. Musick retired December 31 after 27 years in office.
