Oil Slick Spreads Along Bay and Coastline
Seers rushed to shore up defenses as oil coated coastal rocks at Point Reyes and spread 60 miles south along beaches. About 650 to 700 oiled birds were cleaned and kept in captivity until September. Standard Oil faced fines, a hearing, and a massive cleanup involving 600,000 to 1.3 million gallons spilled after the Oregon and Arizona Standard collision under the Golden Gate.
