Partisan Slap Hits Knight in California Senate Bid

In Los Angeles the California Republican Assembly failed to endorse Gov. Goodwin Knight or San Francisco Mayor George Christopher for the U.S. Senate. The powerful candidates' fact-finding committee postponed its recommendation until the state convention in San Jose on March 14, after a 4-3 subcommittee vote against endorsement and a string of tied votes. Patricia Connick led Christopher supporters in a secret ballot bid, but the full committee remained deadlocked, with a 21 vote threshold needed for adoption.
