JFK approves tapping newsmen to curb leaks in 196
Seattle reporters quote an unnamed Kennedy aide saying the CIA was authorized in 196 to wiretap two newsmen to block congressional leaks. The official claimed only grocery lists and bridge scores emerged. Colby later testified the CIA tapped 21 U S residents 1951 to 1965, two private citizens in 1963 to probe leaks, and that the operation had possible presidential approval but was disputed by a high CIA official.
