Senate split on New Hampshire seat fight with tie votes
The Senate Rules Committee deadlocked 4 to 4 over last November's NH Senate contest between Democrat John Durkin and Republican Louis Wyman. A motion to seat Wyman without prejudice failed on a tie, and a motion to refer the dispute to the Rules Committee also failed on a tie. The panel then unanimously adopted that no recommendation could be made and left the decision to the full Senate. The panel also backed seating Henry Bellman without prejudice while referring Ed Edmondson's challenge to study. Governor David Boren began his term with an embarrassing incident, ripping his pants seat in a motel door as he started inaugural day. Walter Jones, 102, of Tacoma, plans a 22-foot motor home road trip this spring funded by magic shows at Masonic lodges, with hopes of bringing along another retiree or a young woman companion.
