Oil tension may spark Middle East war says Pope Paul
Pope Paul warned that rising oil disputes among producers and consumers could trigger a Middle East war. Reports from Hungary claimed Brezhnev delayed a visit over peace talks and warned of imminent danger, while Jordan received 51.6 million of a 350 million Saudi pledge to bolster its defense amid renewed clashes on the Golan Heights. Israeli patrols on Mt Hermon were hit with four soldiers wounded, and Lebanese reports said Israeli shelling hit three border villages. The Pope urged world leaders to show political wisdom as Kissinger’s remarks on force sparked alarm and renewed Geneva talks were urged under Soviet mediation. Sen. Percy, in Bahrain, noted questions about Kissinger’s stance and cautioned against predicting conflict.
