Polaris on Long Test Hop
Cape Canaveral reports the Polaris advance model with new fuels and a glass upper stage sent a heavily instrumented dummy warhead 1600 miles over the Atlantic. It was the year’s first Polaris test and the third solid fueled rocket test in 1961, with Army Pershing failing and Air Force Blue Scout reaching 1000 miles. The Navy called the Polaris a complete success as it launched from a land pad at 12 14 p.m. toward a target southeast of the cape.
