Fatal Blast at Union Oil Lab Kills One Man
A flash explosion in a sump at Union Oil Co research lab in Brea killed Samuel E. Wagers Jr., 23, and seriously burned Gordon Poucher, 39, and contractor employee Ernie Stumpa. Wagers descended into a 20 by 8 by 10 foot tank to remove waste oil. blast ejected him through a manhole about 50 feet away. Initial reports of radioactivity were cleared by Orange County Health Department inspectors.
