Loot Paintings in Neutral Custody Amid Ownership Dispute

In Los Angeles the prized Renaissance paintings once in Florence and later stored in a bank vault are now under temporary custody of Dr. Richard F. Brown of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ownership disputes involve the Italian government and Pasadena resident Mr. and Mrs. Johann Meindl, who say they bought the works after World War II. The restorers alerted the Italian government, and the pieces will be kept in a reinforced concrete vault at the museum. The works include Hercules fighting Hydra and Antaeus and are valued between 200000 and 500000 dollars.
