Fire hits Empire State Building in daytime blaze
A smoldering fire in the Empire State Building forced evacuations from the 24th to the 65th floors and disrupted traffic on 34th Street. A discarded cigarette near a cold-water pipe reputedly caused the blaze, knocking out six elevators and halting some broadcasts while workers fled as smoke filled offices high above Manhattan.
