Economizers Worry Over Navy Vessel Construction Deal

UPI reporting Sen William Proxmire warns the 1.3 billion contract for a large amphibious attack vessel may let Litton Industries build with minimal investment. A new Pascagoula yard financed by Mississippi industrial bonds would be owned by the state and leased to Litton. Navy says terms are needed due to lack of existing facilities.

House Panel Probing GI Censorship Charge

Washington officials report a House subcommittee began probing claims that Army broadcaster newsrooms censored Viet Nam coverage in apparent violation of a McNamara directive. Rep. Proximire criticizes cost structure in multi ship contract

Proximire argues the 100 percent cost reimbursement clause in the large scale amphibious ship and CSA cargo plane contracts creates interest free working capital for contractors. Mississippi, led by Sen John Stennis, owns the amphibious ship plant whereas the CSA plant is government owned.
