Nation of capitalists through private pension funds
A column argues that private and government pension funds totaling over 100 billion dollars position American workers as capitalists. It notes private pension funds exceed 40 billion and are growing, influencing stock and bond markets, and urging appreciation of free enterprise to protect these funds and benefits. McDonald Credits Kennedy in Strike End Hopes
David J. McDonald, president of the steelworkers union, credited Joseph Kennedy with helping to end the bitter steel labor dispute. He described Kennedy as an influential figure in bringing about a contract settlement amid uneasy economic prospects. Kennedy, father of Sen. John F. Kennedy, was said to have worked with financiers and Wall Street figures to push for settlement. Kennedy’s long friendship with industry and labor leaders was cited as a key factor in quelling the strike and stabilizing the economy.
