Canada faces huge problems in Arctic oil hunt
In the Arctic, geologists claim vast oil and gas reserves but exploration shows high costs and limited finds. Drilling in the Beaufort Sea and Mackenzie Delta costs soar, pipelines are uncertain, and native rights and government rules slow progress. Several majors retreat while Panarctic touts gas finds as others pull back.

Arctic pipelines spur multi billion dollar future costs
Drilling figures show 1976 output around 75 000 feet versus 1913's 220 000 feet. J N Mackay of the Bank of Montreal warns future costs will dwarf current spending. The Polar Gas Pipeline proposal would cost about 10 billion to move oil and gas 3000 miles to markets in Canada and the United States, with other proposals also reaching multibillion sums.
