Immunity Granted to My Lai Witness Ahead of Calley Trial
A former soldier in the My Lai probe, Paul Meadle, was granted testimonial immunity by Fort Benning officers allowing him to testify at Lt. William Calley’s murder trial resuming next week. Meadle previously admitted killing 10 to 15 Vietnamese on the day of the massacre but invoked the Fifth Amendment on the stand. The ruling, signed by Will R. Wilson, addresses self incrimination concerns and permits use of compelled testimony only in crim inal prosecutions. The trial nears a holiday recess and prosecutors expected Meadle to testify while Calley faces charges for the deaths of at least 102 villagers.
