Nixon keeps Bunker in Saigon while naming Johnson undersecretary
President elect selects U Alexis Johnson to be undersecretary of state for political affairs and Richard Pedersen as counselor at the State Department. Johnson, a Japan ambassador, will visit Vietnam to discuss Bunker’s stay. Nixon says timing for a peace team statement will come later and lauds the chosen blend of new and experienced officials. The Alaska governor’s confirmation faces the tightest Senate scrutiny among the 12 cabinet picks. The Hickel confirmation hearing is set for January 15. In Sydney, quadruplets are born with one girl and one boy dying.
