Mastermind and Top Lieutenant Doomed for Torso Murder
Los Angeles report says the San Fernando Valley robbery gang mastermind and his top lieutenant were formally doomed to death for the torso murder of a confederate. Superior Judge Herbert Walker denied motions and ordered execution by lethal gas for the 1959 Ward case. Witnesses describe Ward abducted from his home and shot, with limbs severed and buried in canyon graves. The defendants claimed they acted under orders from gang leader Ditson, who sought a larger share of the loot and used a jewelry store as a base. City officials discussed zoning amid the trial and abduction elements.
