Law Grants Parents Access to Childs School Records
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act requires federal funds be withheld from schools that deny parent access to a child's cumulative files and allows challenges to incorrect entries. College students over 18 may see their own files, and disclosures outside the system require parental consent unless court ordered. A League of Women Voters study notes some schools share confidential data with police, credit bureaus, and other agencies.
