Cancer center study eyed for UC region
A $49,487 grant to UC Irvine College of Medicine will support a feasibility study on establishing a regional cancer center in Orange County. Dr Steven Mentrout leads the effort, assessing space, facilities and manpower from UC Irvine, affiliated hospitals, and community agencies.

Rosary for Frank J Charalla owner of a Downey motorcycle shop will be said at Downey Mortuary at 7 a m tonight. Funeral services will be at 9 a m Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church Downey. Charalla died in Guaymas Mexico when a heater set a blanket ablaze while he slept.

Polar Bears plunge at Cabrillo Beach social swim
Polar Bears of Cabrillo Beach at San Pedro held their annual social swim as a dozen members and hopefuls braved 43 degree water. Lifeguards monitored the area while participants collected certificates at the coffee and doughnuts table after the event led by King Albert Rea and Queen Mary Bertsch.
