Gasoline line turn explodes injuring workers in Bellflower
A road grader struck a 16 inch gasoline line of Southern Pacific Pipeline Co near Palo Verde Ave and Artesia St in Bellflower causing a major explosion and fire. Operator John Russell Pittman 46 of Pico Rivera was burned and treated at Ramona Hospital. Two plumbers Sid Spadefor and Robert Kolts were scorched while aiding others. Firefighters controlled the blaze after the pipeline shut off the valve. The line carried 100 octane gasoline from Torrance to Globe Arizona. The grader valued at 12500 was destroyed and about 10000 damage to the line. Pittman was working for a subdivision south of Artesia St.

Washington AP The Air Force on Thursday relieved Maj. Gen. John B. Ackerman commander of the 1th Air Force in the Philippines to report to Washington for a March 5 hearing. An Air Force spokesman said Ackerman spent several thousand dollars in funds to furnish four houses for his family during a two year Philippine tour. The spokesman said the expenditures were within regulations but were for personal prestige and comfort, harming morale at Clark Air Base. Ackerman, a West Point graduate from New York City, faced no formal charges. The service noted he and his family moved among three quarters on Clark and a fourth house at the Campsactivites rest camp near John Hay, about 60 miles away, and that the actions reflected poor judgment and were morale damaging. A House Appropriations subcommittee had previously criticized the housing spending.
