Panama Canal Closure Threat After Tanker Blocks Channel
A tanker named Shozan Maru ran aground in the Panama Canal blocking the forepeak and leaving a six to eight foot high hole ten feet above the keel. Officials say the canal could stay closed for several weeks as salvage plans unfold with 63 ships anchored and air being pumped into flooded tanks to lift the vessel. The ship, 743 feet long and bound from Peru to Dunkirk with iron ore, cannot be circled and its cargo remains unharmed.
