Long Beach market owner John S. Kolege, 63, was shot in both legs Tuesday afternoon when he walked in on a robbery at his store. The bandit fled in a rust colored sedan after forcing Ruth Swank and two others to the rear and taking money from the till.
Washington heard Air Force and industry experts predict a Moon mission this year and a Mars circumlunar flight between 1965 and 1970. Lt. Gen. Donald L. Putt urged Capitol Hill for prompt orders while industry speakers projected Mars and lunar hardware readiness in the 1960s and 1970s.

Torrance High biology teacher Robert Prowell, 35, and a student aide were charged with burglarizing the high school and a Long Beach real estate office. Prowell, free on $1 000 bail, is to appear Friday in San Bay Municipal Court on two burglary counts. Deputy reports tie the case to stolen equipment from Pomona’s California State Polytechnic College.

Apalachin crime convention figure Frank Zito collap ses from a heart attack Tuesday while awaiting grand jury appearance in a meeting investigation. He was rushed to a hospital in serious condition. Zito, from Springfield City, was at a motel when struck.
A Pacific storm battered the area with gusts up to 45 mph, felling trees and shattering windows in Long Beach and San Pedro. Downtown Long Beach recorded 0.96 inches of rain with an season total of 13.12 inches, while Santa Barbara and Los Angeles saw heavy downpours.
