East coast longshore unions back no strike pledge

Top AFL-CIO leaders endorsed a no-strike pledge by six maritime unions representing about 200,000 workers on the East and Gulf Coasts and the Great Lakes. The verbal plan aims to prevent work stoppages during contract talks, set multi year contracts, automatic wage adjustments, and a dispute mechanism. West Coast and other unions were to be invited to join, with ILWU led by Thomas Gleason pushing toward a national accord.
