Iceland plans a diplomatic break with Britain amid the cod war dispute after Reykjavik extended its fishing limits to 200 miles and Britain refused to recognize the claim. NATO anxieties grow as U S forces base Kebaylk in Iceland could be affected, with ally talks ongoing.
President Isabel Peron declared on national television that she will finish her current term, not seek another term. Elections are promised before year’s end, with her term running until May 25, 1977, amid weeks of pressure from leaders and her Peronist supporters.
Paul Best aged 19 died in a Belfast hospital after weeks of agony from a gunshot wound. Police reported sporadic violence across Northern Ireland as the death raises the province’s known toll to at least 1,459. Best was shot Nov 7 by two masked men near Falls Road.
