Only One Vet of 98 in Congress Remembers War
Barrett Quara, a year old high school sophomore in 1898, lied about his age to fight in the Spanish American War. Now an 8 term congressman and senior House Foreign Affairs member, he recalls the war as a turning point ending isolationism and healing Civil War wounds. He notes his service as chief scout for the 33d Michigan and advocates a Spanish-American War stamp.
