Release of Ukrainian archbishop after Soviet torture
Monsignor Josyf Slipyi, aged near 71, head of Ukrainian Catholic hierarchy in exile, was released by the Russians last Christmas after eight years in prison and forced labor in Siberia. Officials caution this does not reflect a shift in Communist policy. Pope John spoke of eastern Europe’s consolation as the release emerged amid Vatican scrutiny of Soviet treatment of religious leaders.
